“Land-Escape: the pursue of freedom in rarefied surroundings”, by Indonesian photographer Apung.

Apung is an electrical engineering with a passion for photography.  He was born in 1966, in Indonesia, in a small city in the Island of Sulawesi, called Palopo, where he currently lives.  He began photography as a hobby in the early 2000’s and soon he shown to be very talented.

The main subject of Apung´s pictures is the landscape of his beautiful island, associated with some moments of the daily life where fishermen becomes protagonists.

He captures images with a minimal look that, at the same time, have a very powerful meaning.  He believes that “photography is a universal language” and he aims to communicate a positive message.

In this exhibition, Land-Escape, Freedom is the main message that Apung is sending.  Escape from the everyday, tedious life, run towards the adventure, into the unknown, represented by the rarefied nature, the greatness of the ocean.

The blue sky in the background, rapresenting freedom, is in opposition with the black image of the fisherman who seems to be trapped in the net of the boat, which rapresents his job.

Cities from a different point of view: Elena Romanova

Elena Romanova is a Russian artist, born in 1985, and raised in Moscow.  In 2003 she moved to London where she studied and painted until 2008.  Then she moved to Spain.  Elena now divides her time between London and her studio in Barcelona. Her paintings are mainly done by using oil or watercolors.  Her works are held in numerous public and private collections in Europe and the United States.

Red is the color of blood, rubies and roses, associated with love and beauty, but also with fire and danger.

Red lipstick, Red shoes, Red dress: it is the emblem of seduction, which no man can resist to.

Red is timeless, like Love.

Monumental Sculpture: “Sho” by Jaume Plensa at the Meadows Museum, SMU, Dallas.

Jaume Plensa, born in 1955 in Barcelona, Spain, is a contemporary artist. He is famous for his big sculptures (up to 66ft – 20 meters – tall) mainly representing humans, that can be light or heavy, made with marble, steel and/or glass. His sculptures are composed with different subjects, from trees to letters, to shoes. His work is meticulous and he is committed to a careful construction, obtaining a clean look. One of his most notable works is Crown Fountain (2000-04) in Chicago’s Millennium Park, one of the most successful public art projects of the past decade. He was awarded with the Medaille des Chevaliers des Arts et Lettres by the French Minister of Culture in 1993, with the National Art Award of Catalonia, Spain, in 1996, and with an honorary doctorate from the Art Institute of Chicago. Plensa has exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide, including in Paris, England, Madrid, Vienna, New York, Chicago and Tokyo.

Sho is one of Plensa’s sculpture and it represents a female head and is formed by white-painted stainless steel openwork mesh. It stands approximately 13 feet tall and 10 feet wide and weighs 660 pounds. It is a portrait of a young Chinese girl, Sho, whom the artist met in Barcelona where his studio is located. The undulating curves of the girl’s facial features and braided hair are emphasized, especially in profile, demonstrating the artist’s ability to represent the human form in large, three-dimension. Created in 2007, it is now exposed in Dallas, Texas, at the SMU, Meadows Museum’s new plaza and sculpture garden since 2009.
